Article VII. Political Action Committee

Section 1. The Political Action Committee is responsible for political fund-raising, insuring membership participation in political campaigns, and making recommendations to the Executive Council for endorsements.

Section 2. The Political Action Committee is responsible for developing membership support for local, state, and national lobbying activities.

What is COPE?

COPE stands for the Committee On Political Education. COPE contributions are totally voluntary and are in addition to the member's dues. COPE funds are collected through payroll deduction and/or a separate one time contribution can be made to the COPE fund. The minimum deduction is 50 cents per pay period. The Union can also hold fundraisers to add to the COPE fund. All of the COPE funds stay with our local. Members may fill out a COPE deduction form to authorize the amount to be deducted from their paycheck per pay period.

The COPE fund is the avenue for supporting personnel and political issues that directly effect the Classified Staff here at Palomar College.

Who can spend COPE funds?
Delegates from the Executive Council make the decisions regarding COPE fund spending. The Executive Council's Political Action Committee, (PAC) is composed of two co-chairs and several committee members from the Union's local. The PAC will make recommendations on political endorsements to the Executive Council. Any funds needed by the PAC will be approved and released by the Executive Council to the PAC. COPE funds give us political clout. We must be able to lobby effectively if we are to succeed in getting the laws we need enacted. A sympathetic Governing Board is helpful when it comes to negotiating terms and conditions of Classified Staff employment and working conditions. Our members need to be kept informed about issues and events that will directly or indirectly affect them.
